Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel took a large truck and ran it through crowds of innocents in the streets of Nice, France Thrusday evening and murdered at least 84 people and injured up to 100 more. A father and son from Texas and 10 children are among the 84 people murdered Thursday night.
A local government official tells media that the truck was driving full speed when it hit the crowd on the Promenade des Anglais, a major boulevard along the Mediterranean Sea.
French police officials found identity papers next to the driver of the truck, which fatally plowed through bodies as it sped and swerved down the Promenade des Anglais in the French Riviera city.
The papers belonged to a “31-year-old Frenchman of Tunisian descent with previous misdemeanor convictions but no known link to extremist groups,” according to the AP.
A U.S. official told Fox News that the attack was in line with ISIS, which has become “increasingly brazen” in its attacks as it comes under increasing military pressure in Iraq and Syria.
A 2010 edition of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s propaganda magazine “Inspire” also called on would-be terrorists to “use a pickup truck as a mowing machine … to mow down the enemies of Allah.”
Keeping with his policy of condemning weapons used in murderous attacks on innocents, President Obama has denounced trucks, and is condemning Republicans for not acting earlier to outlaw trucks, as he recently condemned knives and called for banning them when knife-wielding attackers killed dozens and injured hundreds in separate attacks in China, where guns are outlawed.
