He Went Into the Ocean to Save a Seagull. A Stranger Raced to Save Him.

October 31, 2026 By Editor Leave a Comment

When a young father disappeared into the waters off Florida’s Gulf Coast, psychologist Dillon Harper sensed something was terribly wrong. His attempt to save Stone Romberg would lead to an unexpected friendship with a grieving mother.

William “Stone” Romberg, was a 32-year-old husband and father of two young daughters, Hadley Grace and Lainey Rose.

What began as an ordinary Sunday afternoon on a Florida beach became a tragedy that would make headlines around the world. But beyond the reports of a fisherman who lost his life attempting to rescue an injured seagull lies another story, one of strangers helping strangers, a mother’s remarkable faith, and an unexpected connection between two families.

On October 25, William “Stone” Romberg was fishing along the Gulf Coast when a seagull became entangled in his fishing line. Stone, a 32-year-old husband and father of two young daughters, tried to free the bird, but it remained hooked and struggling in the water. He removed his shirt and entered the Gulf to help it.

Nearby, psychologist Dillon Harper and his wife, Brooke, were walking along the beach. They had watched the incident unfold, and Dillon immediately became concerned about the conditions. The current appeared strong, and the wind was blowing hard.

Stone swam approximately 100 yards offshore, where Dillon could still see him struggling with the bird. As the minutes passed, something about the situation increasingly troubled him, and he experienced a “spiritual” prompting to help the man.

“I immediately felt that there was something wrong, because the current looked strong, and there was a lot of wind that day,” Dillon recalled in an exclusive account provided to Federalist Press.

After approximately five minutes, Dillon and Brooke approached one of Stone’s companions and expressed their concern. Stone appeared to be swimming, but he wasn’t making progress toward shore.

Dillon had worked as a lifeguard years earlier, and his experience told him that something was seriously wrong. The glare on the water made it increasingly difficult to see Stone, and eventually he disappeared from view.

Dillon knew they needed to act.

A Desperate Search on the Water

Dillon began shedding his clothes to go into the water, but spotted a small fishing boat nearby and began running toward it. Others followed, and soon four people were aboard, heading into the Gulf in search of the missing fisherman.

They eventually located Stone and Dillon jumped in and pulled him from the water. He was unconscious.

Dillon immediately began chest compressions and CPR. As he worked, fluid came from Stone’s mouth, and the rescuers continued their efforts while the boat raced back toward shore.

“I immediately began doing chest compressions and CPR,” Dillon recalled. “We continued doing chest compressions until we made it to shore.”

Emergency medical personnel were waiting when the boat returned. The rescuers transferred Stone into their care, and Dillon was hopeful that they might have detected a pulse during the resuscitation efforts.

Stone was transported to a hospital, but despite the efforts of the rescuers and medical professionals, he did not survive.

The loss was devastating. Stone had entered the water because he couldn’t bear to leave an injured bird struggling, and now his wife and two little girls would have to face life without him.

For Dillon, the experience was especially personal.

Two Fathers, Two Families, and an Unexpected Connection

Although the men had never met, Dillon soon discovered that he and Stone had much in common. They were born the same year, and each was the father of two young children.

“I felt that there was somehow a connection between him and me and why I somehow was supposed to be there that day,” Dillon said.

The tragedy stayed with him. As a psychologist, Dillon understood that grief seldom follows a predictable course. It arrives in waves, sometimes overwhelming a person when least expected, and the loss of someone so young can leave families struggling with questions that have no easy answers.

He wanted Stone’s family to know that someone had recognized the danger, that strangers had rushed to help, and that Stone had not been forgotten in those desperate moments on the water.

Dillon reached out to Stone’s wife, Taylor, and his mother, Temple, offering to answer questions or share anything he could about the rescue.

Two days later, Temple contacted him.

She left a voicemail explaining that Dillon’s message had brought her tremendous peace. When they spoke, the conversation lasted more than an hour.

Temple told Dillon about her son, the kind of man he had been, and how much she appreciated the efforts of people who had tried to save his life.

Their conversation would become one of the most meaningful parts of Dillon’s experience.

A Mother’s Faith in the Midst of Heartbreak

As Dillon listened to Temple speak about Stone, he learned more about the young father whose life he had tried to save.

Stone was remembered by his family as a loving husband, a devoted father, and a man whose warmth and enthusiasm made people feel welcome wherever he went. He loved the beach, football, the Atlanta Braves, and spending time with the people closest to him.

Above all, his mother wanted Dillon to know about Stone’s Christian faith.

“She specifically mentioned to me that he loved Jesus and that he felt a personal relationship with Christ,” Dillon recalled.

Despite the unimaginable pain of losing her son, Temple told Dillon that she believed Stone was at peace and that his family would be cared for.

“Stone” Romberg with his wife, Taylor Powell Romberg.

For Dillon, who regularly works with people experiencing grief, their conversation offered an opportunity to share something he had learned through his professional experience.

He told Temple that when someone dies young, those left behind often become consumed by the question of why that person was taken so soon. But the length of a person’s life, he suggested, is not necessarily the measure of its meaning.

“It’s not about the length of life that someone is given, but it’s about the quality of the life that they live with the length that they have been given, regardless of whether it’s ninety years or it’s thirty-two years.”

Stone’s life had lasted only 32 years, but the love he had given his family and the friendships he had built were evident in the outpouring of affection that followed his death.

His obituary described a man who never met a stranger, who could light up a room simply by entering it, and whose greatest joy was being a husband and father.

He leaves behind his wife, Taylor Powell Romberg, and their daughters, Hadley Grace and Lainey Rose.

The Goodness That Remains

There is a poignant symmetry in what happened on that Florida beach.

Stone saw a helpless creature in distress and went into the water to save it. Dillon saw a stranger in danger and rushed to find a way to reach him. And afterward, Stone’s mother, grieving the loss of her son, reached out to the man who had tried to bring him home.

Three acts of compassion, each arising from a willingness to care about someone else.

Dillon does not know why he happened to be on that beach at that particular moment. But he believes the experience brought him into the lives of people he was somehow meant to meet.

“I now feel immensely connected to her,” he said of Temple. “I feel Stone had a hand in connecting both of us so that she could feel peace from my experience that I had and Stone’s final moment.”

For Stone’s family, there will be birthdays, holidays, and countless ordinary moments when his absence will be deeply felt. No words can erase that sorrow, and no act of kindness can replace a husband or father.

But the compassion shown that day, and the friendship that followed, offer a reminder that even in tragedy, people can find reasons to be grateful for one another.

Stone Romberg went into the ocean because he wanted to save a life. Dillon Harper went after him because he believed a stranger needed help. And a grieving mother found comfort in knowing that when her son was in danger, people who had never met him did everything they could to bring him home.

In a world often dominated by stories of division, anger, and cruelty, theirs is a story of something very different.

It is a story of love.
